A mix of changes has caused the data center market to shift locations across Southeast Asia in recent years; Singapore’s decision to drastically limit further data center development led to new markets launching, with the industry realizing that countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and more recently Vietnam and Thailand are extremely low in capacity relative to their respective populations. Leading the way, Malaysia has rapidly scaled from a previously tertiary global market to one already nearing primary status, thanks to considerable availability of land and power in both the southern city of Johor (just across the causeway from Singapore) and the national and business capital of Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur makes sense for data center development, given its metropolitan population of nearly nine million people, with near-constant usage of applications for shopping, food ordering, and ridesharing. Rapid economic growth in recent years has led Malaysia to scale up to an upper-middle-income nation, with incomes in the greater Kuala Lumpur region the highest in the country.
Most data center development has taken place in the suburbs of Cyberjaya. This area has been master-planned over the past thirty years to host research and development, manufacturing, and data centers for the global tech industry. The 30-square-kilometer hub has welcomed an array of the largest multinationals as their local or regional headquarters, with associated government departments and schools calling the area home. Additionally, the infrastructure, such as water supply and permit approvals, is straightforward.
“EdgeConneX is now also pleased to call Cyberjaya home, with an initial campus currently under construction. The TNB 275kV incoming has been successfully energized, providing power at this voltage level to a data center in the greater Kuala Lumpur region for the first time. The development of the first phase of our 270MW project is scheduled to go live in the first quarter of 2026, with all permits secured, water supply ready, and now 70% complete.” – Chi Ling, VP of Real Estate & Site Development, APAC
Cyberjaya is just one of the several EdgeConneX data centers being constructed in Malaysia, along with facilities in downtown Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Jalil. These state-of-the-art centers are designed to provide scalable, high-power solutions that can meet a variety of customer needs. In addition to impressive engineering capabilities, we prioritize safety as the foundation of our operations.
Chi Ling remarked: “Malaysia’s strategic position, abundant resources, and forward-thinking infrastructure make it an ideal hub for data center development. With our new campus in Cyberjaya, we are proud to contribute to this growing ecosystem and support the region’s accelerating digital transformation. Our Cyberjaya project reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence as we help build Southeast Asia’s digital future.”
Befitting a corporate focus on maintaining the safest work environment, EdgeConneX, along with our close partner BCEI, celebrated an impressive milestone earlier this year, marking over 1.5 million safe hours worked; this milestone has since increased to over 3.5 million construction hours that have been completed without injury on site, a testament to the effort maintained in training, signage, and procedures.
With interest rapidly forming, take advantage of the opportunity to call Cyberjaya your home in Malaysia as well!
