Transforming Malaysia’s Digital Landscape: EdgeConneX Builds 300MW Data Centers

December 15, 2023

In a recent interview with Malaysian national daily newspaper The Sun, Sam Lee, Managing Director, Market & Commercial Development, Asia Pacific, for EdgeConneX, shared EdgeConneX plan to build three data centers in Malaysia. Located in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Jalil, and Cyberjaya, these data centers will offer nearly 300MW of capacity.

Asia is seen as a major growth area for data centers due to the demands of cloud computing, e-commerce, gaming, and AI. Malaysia is appealing for its strategic location given in Southeast Asia, submarine cable connectivity, infrastructure, young digitally savvy population, and strong government support.

  • Kuala Lumpur Central Business District (CBD): Marked by an excellent central location, the EdgeConneX data center will be built within the downtown business district of Malaysia’s modern capital, Kuala Lumpur. Offering 19 MW IT Load capacity, this facility will provide customers ample opportunity for customized, build-to-suit configurations and highly proximate, low latency solutions to the capital city.
  • Bukit Jalil: As a prosperous suburb of greater Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Jalil is home to several educational, technological, and medical institutions. With nearly 70 MWs IT Load capacity, this EdgeConneX site is a greenfield build in the MRANTI technology park, offering ample power to address hyperscale and large-scale cloud or AI deployments.
  • Cyberjaya: Located in a region focused on research and development in knowledge-based industries, Cyberjaya is home to several high-tech science parks near Malaysia’s government seat. The EdgeConneX data center campus will have over 200 MWs of capacity and consist of nine buildings spread over 30 acres, providing the scalable capacity and power to meet a whole array of customer requirements in the future.

With close to a US$2 billion investment in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure, EdgeConneX will be one of Malaysia’s largest data center operators. Construction is set to begin on the Cyberjaya data center in January 2024, with the goal to have a fully functioning data center within 20-24 months.

Lee highlighted how EdgeConneX collaborates with the Malaysian government and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to secure renewable energy and other sustainable power solutions for its data center facilities. Innovative designs for the data center campus are being considered, including waterless cooling and designs that promote low power usage effectiveness.
