Taking the Edge to the Next Level in 2020

January 6, 2020

Happy New Year from EdgeConneX!

2020 is only a few days old and already the edge data center industry is off to a running start. Forrester Research recently reported that 57% of mobility business leaders surveyed are interested in leveraging edge computing in 2020. That is great news! Yet, at the same time, it’s also not really a surprise.

Data is Shifting from the Core to the Edge

For a while now, technological developments like the Internet of Everything (IoE), Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Virtual Reality have been shifting the gravity of data and compute from the core to the edge. By allowing data to be analyzed at the edge, the shift to local compute functionality is improving overall enterprise agility and decision making.

At the same time, however, it is resulting in traffic flows and data volumes that the legacy network models of decades past cannot handle.

With over 75 billion connected devices to be active by 2025, EdgeConneX has been hard at work rearchitecting the internet for our customers and partners through the deployment of Edge Data Centers®.

Guided by our motto, “the edge is where the customer needs it,” we have a key role to play in moving compute and data storage closer to end-users, enabling higher capacity, lower latency and reduced expenditures for enterprises across three continents.

Where is the Edge Headed?

Now, as we enter 2020, the key question is: “Where is the edge headed and how will Edge Data Centers support its evolution?” We were recently invited by Data Center Frontier to contribute an article providing our answers. In the article, we identify Five Top Edge Computing Trends that will shape our online futures in 2020 and beyond.

We cover:

1) How the edge and core can work together to help enterprises optimize traffic flows
2) The role of Edge Data Centers in bringing multiple cloud options locally to end users
3) Developments in cloud gaming and how Edge Data Centers solve for developers’ needs
4) The supremacy of high-density deployments in edge facilities to support AI/ML workloads
5) New types of enhanced CDNs that will meet the demand for 4K, AR/VR, and other

You can read in depth on these trends in our full Data Center Frontier Voices of the Industry article here.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list – one could write a textbook on the future of the edge. In addition to the themes featured in the article, we have more to say on other emerging trends such as security at the edge, sustainability and the influence of 5G. We’ll share more on these subjects individually over the coming weeks and months here on our blog.

As always, we welcome your thoughts on the future of edge computing and questions about how we can help you satisfy your needs. Email us at info@edgeconnex.com – we’re always happy to have a conversation and hear your thoughts and ideas.
