EdgeConneX: When Green Leads, Good Follows

April 2, 2024

At EdgeConneX, we’re committed to designing and operating the best-in-class sustainable data center solutions around the globe. We’re taking bold steps to make our operations eco-friendlier and more efficient, from reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) and water usage to enhancing worker safety and maintaining business ethics and integrity. Here’s a closer look at three key initiatives pushing the sustainability boundaries.

Enhancing Water Conservation and Stewardship

Our water stewardship initiative is another leap forward in our sustainability journey. We aim to replenish the fresh water we consume and improve water quality and ecosystem health in our communities. This includes minimizing water use in our data center designs and moving away from water vapor (evaporative) cooling.

We’re also committed to improving our data centers’ designs to fit the local environmental conditions in the coming years, including natural embankments and landscaping that enhance biodiversity across our data center campuses.

Harmonizing our operations with the environment, EdgeConneX aims to protect nature wherever we operate, to ensure that our impact is positive.

Waste to Landfill Diversion

EdgeConneX is pursuing UL2799 Waste to Landfill Diversion certifications across our footprint, a crucial step towards becoming a zero-waste-to-landfill organization. Our Amsterdam data center campus, comprised of five sites, recently achieved Zero Waste to Landfill Operations Platinum at a 100% diversion rate including 3% thermal processing. Diversion includes alternative waste pathways such as recycling, composting, and the reduction or reuse of waste.

At our Amsterdam campus, we also follow the ‘waste to energy’ approach, working with our local waste partners to convert non-recyclable waste materials into usable heat, electricity, or fuel through various processes, including combustion, gasification, anaerobic digestion, and landfill gas recovery. This energy can be used in local communities to power and heat homes and businesses.

UL 2799 provides a straightforward methodology for measuring and validating actual waste diversion rates, enabling us to benchmark our waste diversion performance and assess the impact of new waste diversion initiatives over time.

The Road Ahead

While we’re proud of these advancements, we know that the journey toward sustainability is continuous. We’re committed to driving more innovations in sustainable data center solutions, exploring new technologies, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We will continue to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a sustainable future.
